Triumph Spitfire Engine Rebuild in Time Lapse Photography

I am not a fan of “original” Triumph engines.  Matter of fact, they are nothing but glorified tractor engines.  In the case of the Spitfire, they are pump engines.  However, there are many folks out there that spend generous amounts of cash rebuilding them – I guess to each their own!  For those of you , I thought this might be an interesting video.

Here is a time-lapse photography of a Triumph Spitfire engine rebuild.

And yes…  Before bowtie6 there was a Spitfire.  I actually owned a 1978 Spitfire with the optional factory hard top.  This thing was so much fun to drive but it only had a 1500cc engine and the dreadful 4 speed gearbox; no overdrive.  At highway speeds this thing sounded as if it were about to self destruct and blow up right there on the spot.  This was the primary reason I sold it.

At the time I took this picture, the engine been extensively modified.  The Zenith-Stromberg carburetter had a highly modified needle sourced from the UK, the intake had been seriously ported as well as the head.  It also had a four-into-one header.  The lightweight Panasport wheels were shod with Yokohama A008’s and boy did these things stick.  However they were pretty much slicks.

My cousin Jim also modified the rear suspension quite a bit.  These cars had a tendency to show some weird handling at the limit:  the leif-spring IRS would have the inside tire tuck in during hard cornering and this would cause some “surprises”.  To prevent this, Jim made a special control arm that prevented the dreaded behavior from happening.

In retrospect, I wish I still had this little blue car.  It would have a 2.2 liter version of the Ecotec in it and a custom-made frame with coilovers and a better rear suspension.  Imagine that!  With a real engine under the bonnet and a properly sorted out drive train, this thing would be a missile!  🙂

Custom Ford Pickup

After work today, I stopped by a local bookstore to pick up a couple of magazines.  When I stepped out, I saw this custom Ford pickup.  If I am not mistaken this is a mid 60’s vintage Ford.  My Dad had a ’65.  His was red with white with the exclusive “Twin I Beam” suspension.  Dad really loved that truck and this truck reminded me of how much he enjoyed driving it with me riding shotgun.  At any rate I figured I’d take a few pics and post them here for you all to enjoy.

Here are the photos.  I took them with my iPhone (amazing thing the iPhone) this afternoon around 18:30 – the light was a little dim but you get the idea.

I think this is an extremely nice truck.  The stance is spot on – not too low and not too raked.  It does not have huge tires or huge wheels – these are also “just right”.  Paint is tastefully done and the interior is nostalgic but well made.  The dash was also nicely done.  The back of the cab had a really cool chrome trim (Dad’s truck did not have that).  I say this fellow really pulled it off well and has an awesome truck.  Unfortunately, I did not get to meet the owner.

I am not a Ford truck expert, however I’m sure somebody will probably give me the 411 on the exact year and model.  I would imagine the chrome trim on the cab had to come from a “De Luxe” version or such.  If you know what this is, please let me know.

Update

Thanks to Dennis Baumgartner’s comment (See the comments on this post), I did a little research.  Indeed, this is a 1961-63 F-100 “Unibody” truck.  My Dad’s ’65 had a separate cab from the bed; this one is one solid piece.  In my opinion, this makes it really nice.  I did find a very interesting writeup – CLICK HERE – that describes these trucks.

The part that is even more interesting is the difference between the pictures of the “original” truck and the ones above.  I realize there is a time for “originality” but the one pictured here is such an awesome looking truck!  🙂

Cars & Coffee

Yesterday was the fourth Saturday of January.  Here in Greenville, South Carolina we have our local Cars & Coffee (graciously organized by John Budinich) and it happens to land on the fourth Saturday of the month.  Yesterday was kinda special:  over 100 cars showed up.  This happens at a parking lot of a former grocery store and it is very accessible.  There is a Starbucks Coffee there and that makes for a nice gathering spot.  Want to read more about it?  Click here.

The point is:  if you are a gearhead (and if you are not, bless your heart), then do some research and try to find your local chapter of Cars & Coffee.  You might be amazed what you might find!  If you are anywhere near Greenville, SC come by and join us.  You will have a great time and there are many cool cars to see and many very interesting folks to meet!!!

Here is a picture of bowtie6:

And we are in good company…That is Kip’s red Lotus and John’s yellow Lotus.  bowtie6 is in the background…

The Old, The New…

I should be getting paid by GM for making this post, but I am not – unfortunately.  However, I just wanted to post this because it made for a cool picture.  I hope you agree…

I was over at my cousin Jim’s shop yesterday and three of his clients showed up.  I took the following picture which I thought was pretty significant.  A whole lot of technology on front of your eyes actually.  Both of these beauties represent the very best from Detroit – back then and now.

And so, you get the idea…  The old, the new…

Chevy, runs deep!  🙂

1917 Locomobile – Part 3

I have a new set of pictures of the 1917 Locomobile.  Mainly they are of the interior of this magnificent machine.  The gallery below has many interesting details about the interior.

  • The Volt meter, made by the Westinghouse Company.
  • The clock is a Waltham.  Imagine that!
  • Check out the speedo.  Max speed is 75 mph.
  • All the bits inside the cab are nickel plated.
  • Check out the frames of the rear jumpseats…
  • The steering wheel is pretty cool, with the “spark” and “fuel” levers.

Enjoy!
