Carpet

When the car was purchased extra boxes contained some new 'kits' were included.  Among them was a new carpet set.  The carpet set was complete but sadly the quality of the carpet was poor to say the least.  Fortunately a local automotive upholstery supply had some very nice bulk carpet material.  Several yards of this material were purchased and used to make a new carpet kit from scratch.

Along with the carpet, some closed cell foam was purchased.  This stuff is about 3/8 inch thick and was cut to fit the floorboard areas as well as the rear package shelf.  The foam was covered with the carpet material using contact glue.  These became the carpets for the floors with the advantage the if new ones are to be required they can be replicated very easily.

In areas where the foam was too stiff such as the transmission tunnel, synthetic backing material was used.  This was glued on and the carpet in turn glued to the backing material.  The entire trunk is done this way.  Several advantages resulted from this:

  • Soundproofing.

  • Insulation against heat.

  • Gives the carpet a nice, rich 'feel'.

Finally, to give the footwells a nice 'retro' look a set of custom cut coco mats were made to order.  The material is very attractive in that it is black with red dots.  This matches the outside colour of the car and gives the interior a nice flair.  The coco mats are nice and thick and will last a lifetime.

A great deal of time was invested in measuring, cutting, fitting and gluing all the carpet pieces.  The end result though, is very appealing and has a very professional look about it.
